چکیده

Using the Burr-Lane-Nims2 microvoltmeter, Burr and Hovland' have shown that there is a gradual increase in the electrical potential of chick embryos during incubation. With an instrument which differs slightly from that of Burr, and by placing the electrodes farther from the growing embryo, Romanoff and Cottrell4 obtained comparable results. In 1932 Burr formulated the theory that "the pattern or organization of any growing biological system is determined by an electrodynamic field which controls and regulates the development of every component part."' Inasmuch as chicks developing within the egg show this bioelectric pattern, it was thought of interest to determine what changes in electrical potential take place during the metamorphosis of an insect from the pupa to the adult stage. For this work a BurrLane-Nims microvoltmeter was used. In the experiment reported here 81 Samia cecropia pupae were used. In order to expose the pupae small holes were cut in the cocoons at both ends. This made it possible to apply the saline bridge electrodes directly to the anterior and posterior ends of the pupae at the time that the determinations of potential were made. Of these 81 pupae, 15 died before emergence, 33 proved to be females, and 33 to be males. To prevent drying of the exposed pupae during the time they were not being examined they were kept on moist filter-paper in large humidors. Readings were taken daily for from 3 to 94 days (average 33.8 days) before emergence.

MEMS-Based Muscle Interfaces for Insect Cyborg Control

We, for the first time, demonstrated a reliable hybrid tissue-electronics interface in insects, by using silicon probes and inserting them at an early pupae stage so that the tissue grows around the probes for a highly natural implant in the insect. This work paves the way for future engineering approaches to utilize the bioelectronic interfaces and to create insect cyborgs. A successful emerge...

Sex separation of tsetse fly pupae using near-infrared spectroscopy.

Implementation of the sterile insect technique for tsetse (Glossina spp.) requires that only sterile male insects be released; thus, at some stage of the fly production process the females have to be removed. A further constraint in the use of the sterile insect technique for tsetse is that the females are needed for colony production and hence, a non-destructive method of sex separation is req...

Different emergence phenology of European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana, Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) on six varieties of grapes.

The phenology of insect emergence affects reproductive success and is especially critical in short-lived species. An increasing number of studies have documented the effects of thermal and other climatic variations and of unpredictable habitats on the timing of adult insect emergence within and between populations and years. Numerous interacting factors may affect the phenology of adult emergen...

In order to determine the most resistant stage to various high temperature treatments for disinfesting dried fruits and nuts of postharvest insect pests, effect of different Indianmeal moth (lMM) and navel orangeworm (NOW) egg ages on response to heat was estimated. Of the ages treated, 9 :i: 8 hr old IMM eggs, and 42 :i: 6 hr old NOW eggs proved to be the most resistant stages to high temperat...
